Summary
In early colonial Massachusetts, young Hester Prynne, awaits the arrival of her husband from England. When he doesn't arrive, she assumes he is dead and moves on, bearing a child. The town, however, accuses her of adultry and forces her to wear a scarlet letter "A" on her chest because she won't reveal the name of the child's father. Hester endures the consequences of her sin of adultery and spends the rest of her life in atonement.
